Pew recalls his grandparents, Joseph N. Pew, Jr. and Alberta Craven Hensel Pew, especially her influence on his love of the outdoors. He also recalls his work in the auditing department of the Sun Oil Company. He discusses his family's connection to Nova Scotia and how he came to live there. In 1977 he joined the board of the Glenmede Trust Company and its Committee on Grants. He discusses his personal interest in conservation grantmaking, how grantmaking at the Pew Charitable Trusts changed in the period between 1977 and 1990, his impressions of its grantmaking program areas, and his speculations on its future.

Fred H. "Bud" Billups, Jr. was born in 1938 in Richmond, Virginia. His father worked for Standard Oil of New Jersey and his family moved a great deal, including several years in Cuba. He graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia and from the University of Virginia. Billups married in 1962 and had one son and one daughter. After service in the navy and work with Exxon, he joined the Glenmede Trust Company in 1976 as manager of the charitable trust department, resigning in 1988....

J. Howard Pew, II, was born in 1948 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania to Joseph N. Pew, III, and Doris Myers Pew. He grew up in Gladwyne and attended schools in Haverford. He spent one year at the Shrewsbury School in England, three years at the University of Vermont, and took his bachelor's degree at the Pennsylvania State University.
